Ponderosa Leisure Farms is a 53-hectare residential flower garden community located in Silang, Cavite, a collaboration between the 20-year-old Ponderosa Farms and developer Landco Pacific Corporation. The second Leisure Farms development, it is another first of its kind-a garden community with residential resort features in the country.
Adorned in rustic Mexican Spanish beauty, features and amenities include the Villa Ponderosa Clubhouse, El Refugio Meditation Garden, Campo Verde Campsite, the Las Rosas outdoor dining restaurant, and the Plaza Maravilla with its flower produce market, and food and retail stores. Ponderosa Leisure Farms features round-the-clock security as well as Maintenance and Care Services for hassle-free gardening.
The village is divided into 1000 sqm lots, on gently rolling terrain with cool Tagaytay weather. Just one hour from Makati, the project is a gem of a location, featuring 2 different access routes-through Tagaytay proper, or from the Sta. Rosa Exit, South Superhighway.
A new take on Mexican architecture
Ever wondered how Philippine domestic architecture would have looked like had the Spaniards not left the country? Although, the Philippine was developing its own architecture at the time when Iberians chose to make an untimely exit, chances are much of the structures that will predominate will be heavily influenced by Spain and yes, you guessed it the Mexicans!
Ofcourse, Mexico around the turn of the 20th century was already independent of Spain, but considering the fact that much interchange occurred prior to that, it’s safe to say that the Viceroyalty of Mexico exerted enough influence in our development domestic architecture to make an impact.
With the advent if American rule (or “ tutelage,” their preferred term) much of that influence was by and large frittered away and consigned to history’s bodegas, and much of what could have been, remained just that. As such, it was truly surprising to find a developer courageous enough to take history’s “might have been(s)” and turn it into an honest to goodness and truly viable, Mexican-inspired community. That community is Ponderosa Villas in Silang Cavite.
Do not expect “ Marimar” or various telanovela characters to come sashaying down this community’s well-planned grid of streets though. Nonetheless, the houses with their tile roof and vibrant (though some-what uniform) colors do present the illusion of an Iberian-inspired village – one that is equally at home in Spain, Mexico, and perhaps (with a bit of regret) the Philippines.
A visit to one of its model houses, Villa Althea, is a case in point of how seemingly appropriate this example
of domestic architecture could be in the country. The house, which is situated on a low rise, presents a suburb-friendly aspect. Upon entering, one immediately finds oneself in a hallway wherein the different areas of the home (e.g. living room, dinning room, private rooms) are visible. This engenders a feeling of spaciousness, which in turn is reinforced by the somewhat higher than average ceiling.
Light is very much apparent as well – a characteristic of Mexican and Philippine architecture. Whereas Iberian structures are light-challenged (Spanish houses and church interiors for one dark and inward-looking), the typical Mexican and Pinoy homes are noteworthy for their love of light. At Villa Althea, the large sliding windows and floor to ceiling doors reinforce this love affair, which combined with the house’s warm colors create an unusually festive atmosphere.
The appropriately “open” plan and light mood of the house are even apparent in the private quarters. The master’s bedroom for one has sliding floor to ceiling glass doors that do not only allow light to flow through unimpeded, but actually can make this most private areas stage-like in appearance-especially when viewed from the street. Again the similarities between the Mexican and Philippine domestic idiom are quite apparent in this regard. Traditional Philippine houses after all, are provided with sliding windows (of capiz and later colored “sampaguita” glass) that when opened, show the interiors of a house, along with its denizens in a stage-like tableaux.
We were told that much of the furnishings and accents of the rooms-and the house in general-were really sourced from Mexico. Although we were expecting that much, what has been used (Mexican silver ware and pottery excluded) are nonetheless quite reminiscent of our own traditional furnishings. The wooden furniture for instance, with their carving and turnings, evokes an emotional response akin to the Filipino’s love for anything and everything baroque. They are that similar.
All in all, Villa Althea in particular-and the Ponderosa Villas in general-is unique development that marries what might have been in domestic architecture and the Filipino’s present day needs. One can just imagine if all the communities in the Philippines are as picture-perfect and Iberian-inspired as the homes in this development. We would no doubt be unique in Asia, and if I may hazard an opinion, would be not as lost and as confused as a nation in terms of identity
Hacienda – style living
Imagine your backyard as wide open. It could even be an orchidarium, or a lush herbal garden.
The Ponderosa Villas have Santa Fe-style postcard-perfect homes with a backyard that is the dream of every nature lover. The Ponderosa Leisure Farms in Silang, Cavite, is spread across 80 hectares of rolling terrain and is described as the country’s first flower garden community.
There are three kinds of villas – Villa Amaranta, Villa Althea and Villa Jasmina. Seventy-five percent of the lot areas are allotted to garden space. Enjoying the outdoors is most definetly the best setting for entertaining or simply enjoying time with the family.
What is even better than having a great garden is not worrying about maintaining it. Ponderosa has made available a maintenance and care service for its residents. And the best part of it is there is a meditation garden called El Refugio (the refuge).
Only two villas remain Villa Amaranta, which stands out with its heavy, carved wooden door and wrought iron grill work, and Villa Althea, the only home with a trellised courtyard. The villas are drenched in rich colors of Mexican design and each home is unique. The villas were created by LANDCO in partnership with the Perez-Rubio family.
Spanish Mexican Villas amid blooms at Ponderosa Leisure Farms
SPANISH-Mexican Villas at the Ponderosa Leisure Farms are some of the most picture-perfect scenes that the Tagaytay landscape can offer.
Benefiting from the rich Tagaytay sunlight, the homes in Ponderosa evoke warmth that’s unheard of or seen in this part of the country. And put against an awe-inspiring backdrop of colourful blooms, the community is definitely one of a kind.
That’s just the view from a distance. Look closer and you will see in the intricate detail the trappings of life in glorious Spain or in festive Mexico.
The details are rich and splashed with a variety of colors that range from rich, earthy tones of terracotta, ochre, tangerine, and mustard. These may be woven into the tile work, wrought iron grille works and heavy carved wooden doors generally characteristic of Mexican-inspired architecture.
The result is magnificent as they evoke colourful art, culture and traditions and old world charm.
Add to that the water element infused into each home scheme courtesy of the courtyard to make living in Ponderosa an invigorating experience.
These features are all present in all three of its villas—Villa Jasmina, Villa Althea and Villa Amaranta.
Space as main feature
It’s hard to miss one other feature of all Ponderosa Villas–space—lots of it and in the right places. Any resident can benefit from the freedom afforded by the sprawling open space of each home inside and out. Each villa is spread to maximize the space especially because they are single story structures.
Windows are wide and doors slide to open to the outdoor areas of green and a bounty of other colors. Inside, living spaces spill into dining and kitchen areas. Personal space is also stressed here as every bedroom has its own toilet and bath and a pocket garden to make each bathing experience an ultimately fresh one. Even the main living area has its own powder room.
Wander around a Ponderosa home and you’re sure to get a magnificent view of the surroundings.
You will be delighted to know that a good 70% of each home is allotted for garden area where you can create a little paradise within arms reach.
All of these contribute to the creation of the mood of a rustic refuge as well as a holiday and vacation home.
Beauty can be found in every space at Ponderosa Leisure Farms – from the flowers, the houses to the space. If they’re not already enough reason to make it your home, what will?
